Weakness for Fashion @ Dubai Fashion Week! - Tuesday, April 27, 2010

The curtains have just closed on the hottest catwalks in the region. The Dubai Fashion Week 2010 recently closed after been declared a mammoth success for all who live and love FASHION! \nThough I have always been closed linked to Dubai Fashion Week, this year my involvement has, by far, been the maximum, as I unveiled my creations for the cream of the crop in Dubai. But more on that later, right now I’m going to give you my account of the adrenaline pumping action that got our hearts thumping!. Day one had a nice mix of the contemporary and the classic. Hanayen created magic with her Abaya and Sheila collection. A fun twist, while still retaining convention is Hanayan’s forte.
Spring is IN, and Sobia Nazir’s elegant new collection brings you a plethora of floral and arty prints to choose from.
Hajra Hayat’s classic beaded work was exquisite\nDubai based Amal Murad stunned us with her exquisite abayas
Mariam Al Mazro’s collection this year seemed to be inspired by Alice in Wonderful. Very fairy tale like, flowing and feminine!
DAS Collection by the Beljafla sisters was eye catching. A creative mix of tradition with chic!\nAnd New York based Andres Aquino’s dramatic display of creativity added a touch of flambouyance to the stage with his use of beautiful vibrant colours and exquisite pleating!. Day 2 started off with the same energy as Day one.
Nisha Sagar has designed for so many prominent personalities over the years, and her collection still exudes the same feminine style and feel. Very easy to wear.
Emirati designer Abeer Al Suwaidi will always be remembered for her use of bold colours and of course for introducing the skinny Abayas ! Hats off to you Abeer!
Pamela Phlaphongphanit added the eastern Mediterranean high end touch to her work. Love the use of printed silks and chiffon with brocades, organza, leather and taffeta fabrics.
Barbara Bela presented a chic collection of evening wear.. which coalesced versatility and modernity
The Iconic Show pumped the audiences with a surge of young and vibrant energy!
Tia from Soraya & Ajay was a delightful collection of lehengas, abayas, saris and ethnic evening wear. . The achievements of the students of The Preston University include awards at the Bride Show, Emirati Designer of the year and the Red Bull Air Race Uniform Design. It was great to young talent on the catwalk with a fresh feel of flambouyance!
Homa Qamar’s wide collection ranged from abayas and Sheilas to daily, semi formal and formal wear Shrekahnth’s collection is inspired by the 14th century Arab traveler Ibn Battuta Aanchal’s creations were filled lots of trendy, flirty, chic, and sophisticated pieces..making the presentation quite fun and energetic!
Aly Fawaz has studied in Paris after which he joined the talents of Lolita Lempika, Christian Lacroix and Yamamoto. His collection included beautiful flowing evening gowns in very delicate hues and cuts The Sa Soie line was a beautiful collection of wedding gowns and high end evening wear. Bright colours and bold cuts are the trademark of this line
Over the years, Satya Paul''s label has evolved from a quintessential Indian designer sari label to a brand for international couture. The fluid form, flamboyant use of colors and experimental dash are the key-defining elements because of which the brand churn out works of art and not just fashion garments. On the onset of Day 4, Rahil Hesan was first in line with her Warda Couture prêt a porter line.\nMichael Cinco’s quest for excellence in fashion has taken him from the Philipines to Central St.Martins in London and he has finally found his niche in Dubai.
Delhi based designer Ekta Singh’s show started with the sound of tabla drums and hip hop beats pointing out that the collection was inspired by influences of the East and West.\nPakistani born designer Hassan Shehervar Yasin has been in the fashion business for more than 15 years. Winner of several awards and accolades, his collection at DFW was an ode to his grandmother as a mark of honouring Pakistani culture, with a modern touch added in. I personally thought his work exceeded expectations and really Par Excellance...
And next on the ramp, are the Emerging Talent Winners from SPLASH who displayed their incredible designs...Its always great to see the new kids on the block... And finally, I’m honoured, humbled and was very very excited to present my own collection “ROCK CHICK” for the very first time on the catwalk of the Dubai Fashion Week. Associated with jewellery house “Agatha Paris”, I present to you the ROCK CHICK COLLECTION FROM PEPPER BY UMA. The use of metallic flowing tops and ribbed tights or steamy hot pants represented the "rock chick" that lies within each of us. She who dares to dress and live on her own terms and isn''t shy of being in her own skin. I was so touched to see so many of my friends, such as Manish Malhotra, Sarah Belhasa, Rekha and Mahesh Taurani, Raza Beig and many many more, cheer for me and celebrate my success. A BIG THANK TO THEM AND TO EVERYONE WHO CAME :). Day 5 kicked off with the collection of Tina G Bedi who set the stage ablaze with her fun and funky collection of garments which girls like you and me would love to be in! . Amber Feroz took the stage by storm... I have always been a big fan of his work...\nInspired by the ocean, Frilz by Ash brought out a sea of ocean greens and marine blues, plus touches of the mermaid with wide sleeves and lots of eclectic headgear.. You had to ‘sea’ it to believe it!
I enjoyed the rich embroidered haute couture from Manzar and Hirsch. The duo created a grand effect with the use of a traditional colour palette. \nThe seven colours of the rainbow that surround us in the earth''s creation also correlate to the colours of our inner ''spiritual'' side - the chakra centres. This was Z for Z’s inspiration for the latest collection which covered all the colours and finally had the show stopper in pure white! That made quite a statement.
From enchanted forest dear horns, to shapes of the dresses and details on the fabric, Amato by Furne One went all out to wow the crowds and what a show he put up!
And finally the grand finale of the one week long eclectic surge of creative energy... Sabyasachi took the stage with his mind blowing creations. Words always fall to express his talent. All that I can say is that if Fashion was a tribe, Sabyasachi would be the ruler!
It was an immense experience for me this time. After studying design, it was my dream, just like any other fashion student’s, to one day have my collection displayed by beautiful models on an international catwalk. And this year, my dream came true in front of my own eyes. I want to spread this message to all young students, of any subject for that matter, that ‘IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, YOU CAN ACHIEVE’. Good luck and God bless...
Love,
Uma
